Negative exponents

01Keep dividing by 2 as the exponent decreases#

Keep dividing by 2 as the exponent decreases. After 20=12^0=1, the next values are one half and one quarter.

A negative exponent asks for a reciprocal. For a nonzero base aa and positive integer nn:

an=1ana^{-n}=\frac{1}{a^n}

For 424^{-2}, first compute 42=164^2=16. Then take its reciprocal: 42=1/164^{-2}=1/16. The value is positive; the minus belongs to the exponent.

02Keep the sign of the base inside parentheses#

Keep the sign of the base inside parentheses. Since (2)3=8(-2)^3=-8, its reciprocal is (2)3=1/8(-2)^{-3}=-1/8. A zero base is excluded because its reciprocal would divide by zero.
